CAL Collaborative

In 2016 Gabriel Calatrava founded CAL Collaborative, an interdisciplinary design studio conceptualized as a creative ecosystem comprised of talent from across the fields of architecture, engineering, academia, life sciences, and product design.

Mirroring the structure of a design studio at University, the team tackles projects in a wide range of scales, from the design of a bottle to large urban master plans, with critical analysis and rigorous approach. Research is a critical foundation of CAL’s process, and underpins each project. Each project begins with an exhaustive inquiry into the key physical, environmental, historical, and experiential conditions of the site, inputs which are mapped, evaluated and translated into a framework for a contextually responsive architecture.

Working through both analog methods and emerging technologies, CAL develops each project as a bespoke response to its context, brief, and technical parameters. Through a systematic exploration of the project’s broader solution space, design concepts emerge that are efficient, refined, and deeply rooted in place.

The studio is composed of international talent from varied backgrounds, including recent graduates, current students, PhD candidates, senior architects, researchers, and independent designers. This diverse network brings a range of perspectives to the design process, allowing CAL to approach each project with a blend of curiosity, experience, and imagination.
